Mp Mukunji proposes tax cuts on animal feeds to adress milk shortage

Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji is calling for tax relief on animal feeds and other agricultural inputs, saying the move could help dairy farmers increase milk production and address the country’s milk shortage.

Mukunji argues that the high cost of livestock feeds is making it difficult for farmers to maximise milk yields from their dairy herds.

He says reducing the cost of production should be prioritised before introducing alternative milk-producing animals.

Speaking during the handover of a National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF)-financed sub-chief’s office at Kiambuthi in Kirimari Ward, the legislator questioned the proposal by President William Ruto to introduce buffaloes for milk production, suggesting that supporting existing dairy farmers would be a more practical starting point.

He maintained that making feeds more affordable could enable farmers to increase output, potentially doubling milk production while improving their earnings.
