IEBC Warns Politicians Against Using Goons Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned politicians against sponsoring goons to disrupt political activities, saying those found culpable risk disqualification from the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with the Ministry of Interior, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the commission will firmly enforce the Electoral Code of Conduct to curb political violence and safeguard free and fair elections. He noted that politicians who mobilise criminal gangs to intimidate rivals or disrupt campaigns will face strict legal action, including possible disqualification from the ballot.

Ethekon also urged political leaders to engage voters peacefully instead of exploiting unemployed youth to cause chaos. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen pledged government support in tackling political violence, saying security agencies will hold those behind goonism accountable as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.
