Bishop warns against raising children in luxury

The Diocese of Embu Bishop Rt. Rev. Peter Kimani Ndung’u, has warned that excessive pampering of young people could be contributing to the growing cases of indiscipline in society and schools.

Speaking during Our Lady of Visitation Deanery Catholic Women Association (CWA) Prayer Day held at Mary Mother of God Karurumo Parish, Bishop Kimani said some parents have denied children the opportunity to learn resilience by exposing them to luxuries at an early age.

He observed that some parents provide their children with everything they desire, including expensive vehicles, making it difficult for them to appreciate the value of education and hard work.

“How can a child take education seriously when they already have access to the things they are told education will help them achieve?” the bishop posed.

The bishop said denying children certain comforts and luxuries while they are growing up should not be viewed as cruelty but as part of responsible parenting aimed at shaping disciplined and hardworking individuals.

He emphasized the importance of instilling a strong work ethic among children, saying this is essential in building a responsible future generation.

Citing an example of a parent who complained about a school serving learners sour rice, Bishop Kimani criticized the tendency of some parents to yield to every demand made by their children.

He further cautioned parents against speaking negatively about other people or institutions in the presence of their children, noting that young people often imitate the attitudes and behaviors they observe at home.

At the same time, the bishop urged women to deepen their prayer life and cultivate the spirit of forgiveness within their families and communities.

He said children learn important values such as forgiveness, respect and compassion by observing the example set by their parents, especially their mothers.
