Calls to Abolish Boarding Schools Draw Criticism Following Utumishi Girls Tragedy

Calls to abolish boarding schools following the recent fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy have drawn criticism from various leaders and stakeholders, who argue that the move would not address the root causes of student unrest.

The proposal resurfaced during a parliamentary session last week after a dormitory fire at the school claimed the lives of 16 students and left several others injured.

Speaking on the matter, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Chairperson John Mugo Mate dismissed the suggestion as misguided, saying boarding schools play a vital role in promoting national unity and patriotism by bringing together learners from different regions and backgrounds.

Mate argued that the government should instead focus on strengthening discipline, mentorship, and security within learning institutions. He also called on parents, leaders, and guardians to serve as positive role models for young people.

Lawyer Hudson Ikinya echoed the sentiments, attributing the problem to broader societal challenges and declining moral values. He said children often imitate negative behaviors they observe from adults and may resort to destructive actions as a way of expressing frustration.

Parent Peter Ciri urged relevant agencies to convene and investigate the underlying causes of school unrest, insisting that abolishing boarding schools is not the solution.
