Health Experts in Embu Warn Against FGM, Cites Health Risks And Declining Marriages

Health experts in Embu County have called on residents to abandon Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), warning that the practice exposes young girls to severe and lifelong health complications.

Speaking exclusively to Kimuri FM, Embu County Health Education Officer Magdarene Wakina say FGM increases the risk of complications during childbirth, causes long-term psychological trauma, and may affect sexual and reproductive health.

She warned that the practice remains a major public health concern despite ongoing awareness campaigns.

She noted that cases of childbirth complications linked to FGM continue to be reported in Embu hospitals, urging parents and community leaders to take a firm stand against the practice.

“FGM has no medical benefit. It endangers the health and future of our girls, especially during childbirth and in their overall wellbeing,” she said.

She further urged residents to report cases of the practice to relevant authorities, saying the county government remains committed to protecting the rights and health of girls and young women.

She also encouraged communities to embrace education and sustained awareness as key tools in eliminating the practice.
