A priest in the Catholic Diocese of Embu has urged Christians to be cautious about the people they trust with their personal struggles, warning that some individuals take advantage of vulnerable moments for selfish gain.
Speaking during a homily at Our Lady of Assumption Parish–Embu, Rev. Fr. Isaac Mwai said many people facing challenges often retreat to their comfort zones, where they become easy targets for opportunists. He noted that desperation can lead to poor decisions, worsening an already difficult situation.
Fr. Mwai cited the example of a woman who turned to prostitution due to economic hardship, explaining that her attempt to find a way out led her into deeper struggles. He emphasized the need for discernment when seeking help.
Referencing the biblical journey to Emmaus, the priest spoke about Cleophas and another disciple who encountered Jesus as a stranger.

He said Christ later revealed Himself through the breaking of bread, restoring their hope and redirecting their path, a lesson he said Christians should emulate in times of despair.
The priest also cautioned against blindly trusting counsellors, noting that not all offer genuine guidance. He warned that some individuals pose as helpers while exploiting those in distress, likening such behavior to the temptations of Jesus, where the devil strikes at moments of weakness.
He called on believers to remain spiritually alert and careful about whom they open their hearts to. The liturgical program during the Mass was led by members of the Young Adult Catholic Association (Y.A.C.A) from St. Teresa Kiambuthi Catholic Church.
