EACC recovers 2.7-acre grabbed school playground in Kikuyu

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered a 2.7-acre school playground in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, following efforts to reclaim public land grabbed by private individuals.

The recovery marks a significant step in protecting public resources and restoring land meant for educational purposes. School playgrounds provide learners with space for sports, physical education and other extracurricular activities that support their growth and development.

The Environment and Land Court in Thika delivered the judgment on October 5, 2026, declaring the allocation and registration of the land in the name of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Ruguthi Women’s Guild illegal and null and void.

According to EACC, investigations established that the former County Council of Kiambu had reserved the land for school use in 1957. Investigators found no documents showing that the group had paid for the property or obtained a valid allocation.

The court’s decision safeguards the playground used by more than 1,300 pupils from the three schools, ensuring continued access for sports, learning and recreation.

The commission has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public property and preventing the loss of resources intended to benefit the public.
