Embu leaders demand tough action on goons ahead of 2027 election

Leaders from Embu County have condemned the rising cases of political goonism, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to peace and democracy as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a church fundraising event in Karurumo, the leaders urged security agencies to take firm action against politicians accused of financing and mobilizing gangs to disrupt political activities.

Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to bar any politician found sponsoring goons from contesting elective seats. He said those behind political violence should face the full force of the law.

Runyenjes MP Eric Muchangi Karemba echoed the sentiments, saying no individual should be spared in investigations into goonism. He warned that continued political violence could undermine Kenya’s democratic processes and peaceful coexistence

Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki Njeru urged aspirants to conduct their campaigns with decorum and respect for the rule of law. She also appealed to young people to reject attempts by politicians to recruit them to cause violence against rivals.

Njoki further called on both the government and opposition to exercise restraint and prioritize national unity, while urging Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure decisive action against those fueling political violence.
