Kenya celebrates 61st Labour Day

President William Ruto has announced a 12% increase in general wages and a 15% rise in agricultural sector pay during this year’s Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County.

Addressing thousands of workers and union leaders, the President acknowledged the critical role of workers in driving economic growth, describing them as the backbone of the country’s development. He said the wage increment was in recognition of their resilience and contribution to national stability.

Ruto also highlighted ongoing government efforts to improve worker welfare, including reforms in the health sector that will allow teachers and public servants to access medical services under a “walk-in, walk-out” system without co-payments.

On employment and housing, the President pointed to the Affordable Housing Programme, noting that over 270,000 housing units are under construction, which he said is creating jobs and expanding opportunities for workers across the country. He reduced the affordable housing deposit from 10% to 5%, and pointed out that one can only have one unit under their name.

However, the celebrations took place amid concerns from labour unions over rising living costs, taxation, and delayed labour reforms, with workers pushing for even higher wage adjustments to match economic realities.

The 61st Labour Day event was held outside Nairobi for the first time, marking a historic shift as the government sought to engage workers at the grassroots.
