BodaBoda operators commend Embu police conduct during fuel price protests

Boda boda operators in Embu County have praised police officers for what they termed as measured and disciplined handling of Tuesday’s nationwide demonstrations over rising fuel prices.

Led by Joseph Thuku, also known as Kaka, the riders said law enforcement officers managed crowds peacefully, avoiding the kind of violent confrontations that have previously resulted in casualties, injuries, and destruction of property during protests.

The operators observed that the use of excessive force in past demonstrations has often worsened tensions and, in some cases, opened opportunities for criminal activity such as looting. They urged security agencies to maintain restraint when managing public protests.

While acknowledging the economic pressure caused by high fuel costs, the group said they did not participate in the demonstrations, arguing that dialogue remains the most effective avenue for resolving such national concerns.

Another rider, David Kabaka, dismissed suggestions that boda boda operators in Embu were behind the mobilization of protesters, distancing themselves from any organized protest planning in the town.

Jackson Nyaga, commonly referred to as Ruto, called on the government to take urgent steps to lower fuel prices, noting that global issues, including conflicts in the Middle East, have contributed to the current surge.

Elsewhere in Embu Town, businesses remained closed for most of the day as security agencies maintained a strong presence to prevent possible unrest linked to the nationwide protests.

Traders expressed concern over the situation, with many fearing potential vandalism and losses.

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Embu Chapter, led by Chairperson Mugo Mate, also urged the government to address the rising fuel costs, warning that the trend is increasing the cost of doing business and affecting livelihoods across the county.
